Scifi Orthogonal
An independent editor reading a science-fiction novel beside a research terminal

About the editorial project

A careful guide for readers who enjoy difficult worlds.

Scifi Orthogonal is an independent project by a software builder and lifelong science-fiction reader. It helps readers follow demanding novels, understand the ideas beneath them, and decide how far they want to keep exploring.

Each companion is researched from the novel, publisher or edition information, and subject sources connected through the Idea Atlas. Story summaries, diagrams, and interpretations are original editorial work.

Editorial method

How a guide is made

  1. 1. Begin with the story. The novel’s events, character relationships, structure, and ending form the primary evidence for every interpretation.
  2. 2. Find the reader’s difficult points. The guide identifies dense terminology, unusual narration, large casts, and ideas that change how later events should be understood.
  3. 3. Check the surrounding ideas.Scientific and philosophical explainers draw on the sources listed in the connected Idea Atlas. The novel’s argument is described separately from present scientific consensus.
  4. 4. Review the complete reading path.Character anchors, story turns, visuals, and ending analysis are checked together so each section prepares the reader for the next.

What readers can expect

Clear boundaries build better explanations.

Spoilers

Novel pages give one clear warning before discussing the complete story and ending. They do not repeatedly interrupt the article with fictional lock states.

Science and interpretation

A novel’s claims are not presented as scientific consensus. Idea pages identify established knowledge, speculative models, engineering possibilities, and unresolved questions in plain language.

Original work and copyright

Summaries, analysis, diagrams, and teaching visuals are original. The guides do not reproduce book passages beyond brief references needed for discussion.

Generative visuals

Some teaching illustrations are created with generative image tools, then reviewed and captioned for story clarity. They are original explanatory images, not adaptation stills.

Affiliate independence

Commercial book links are clearly labeled and kept separate from editorial judgment. If an approved affiliate link or tag is configured, the page displays a qualifying-purchases disclosure; editorial coverage is not sold to publishers or retailers.

Privacy

Saved novels stay in the current browser. The public site has no account system and does not require chapter or reading-progress tracking.

Corrections

Errors should leave a visible trail.

Factual corrections that materially change a guide or explainer are recorded here with the page, change, and date. Small spelling and formatting fixes may be corrected without a log entry.

No published corrections yet.

Independent and reader-supported

Keep the next coordinate coming.

Support helps fund hosting, source access, and the time required to map another novel. It does not purchase coverage or influence conclusions.
