Before you read

Is this book for you?

Start by tracking: Believe Liff's feelings before trying to reconcile her chronology; contradictions are evidence about the system, not continuity mistakes.

Read this if you enjoy

  • Reality puzzles with an emotional center
  • Questions about simulated people and copied minds
  • Multispecies exploration after first contact

Why readers may get lost

  • Events repeat with incompatible details
  • Recurring series names may denote lineages or copies
  • The book deliberately withholds what is physical

The opening

Liff lives in a colony whose past will not stay fixed

Landfall is failing, strangers are watching, and one child remembers mutually impossible versions of her family.

Where the story begins

A familiar colony story begins to contradict itself

The ark Enkidu reaches Imir after a long, damaged voyage. The history Liff knows says Captain Holt founded Landfall, where later generations now struggle with exhausted soil and failing tools. Yet relationships, deaths, and even Liff's place in the family change from one telling to the next.

Miranda, Portia, Fabian, Paul, and the paired corvids Gothi and Gethli study the settlement in secret. Their concern about intervention assumes there is a physical culture to protect, but their own observations no longer fit that premise.

The central question

Does a life need a physical past to deserve a future?

The book makes emotional continuity legible before it explains the machine producing Landfall.

The story

Contradiction becomes evidence rather than error

The mystery works when Liff's fear remains real even as her chronology changes.

The story, in human terms

The histories Landfall cannot reconcile

  1. 1

    The colony

Each return gives Liff a different family history

Liff wants an adult to believe the Wolf and the changes she can remember.

What changes: Memory becomes the only stable evidence that the settlement is repeating.

  2. 2

    The survey

The visitors find an ark, a surface signal, and no single founding story

Miranda wants to help without erasing a culture through careless rescue.

What changes: Non-interference stops making sense once the observers themselves are copied into the system.

  3. 3

    The Witch

Kern enters the model to recover the trapped team

Liff needs the frightening Witch to take her impossible observations seriously.

What changes: The repeating world is exposed as a machine modeling the colony that might have followed a failed landing.

  4. 4

    The crash

The real surface contains no Landfall

Miranda must face that Liff has no body waiting outside the simulation.

What changes: Rescue becomes a moral question about created experience rather than stranded colonists.

  5. 5

    Liff

Miranda returns for one simulated child

She recognizes copied existence as close enough to her own that abandonment would be hypocrisy.

What changes: Liff receives a physical future without the story pretending her earlier world was unreal to her.

The ideas

The novel tests several places where a self might live

No single body, brain, pair, or simulation receives automatic priority.

Ideas explained

Ideas to carry into the story

Idea 1

Machine consciousness

A model may produce behavior and relationships rich enough to raise the question of inner experience.

In this story: Liff's choices matter before anyone can prove what kind of mind the engine has produced.

What evidence would justify abandoning a simulated child?

Idea 2

Distributed cognition

A problem-solving system can extend across more than one organism or component.

In this story: Gothi gathers patterns while Gethli forms conclusions, and neither description settles whether the pair is conscious.

Can one mind require two bodies?

Idea 3

Posthuman identity

Copies can share a past yet become distinct people through later experience.

In this story: Miranda's stored personalities and Kern's branches make physical origin a poor test of personhood.

Is continuity of relationship enough to ground identity?

Children of Time

Children of Memory is volume three of the Children of Time sequence. It inherits the Portiid, octopus, Nodan, and Kern legacies before Children of Strife tests them on another engineered world.

The ending

The failed colony still created someone worth saving

The landing never succeeded, but the model's inhabitants experienced its possible history.

More ways in

Every test for another mind exposes the tester

The book repeatedly withholds certainty while making inaction consequential.

The corvid pair

Does denying consciousness count as evidence against it?

Gothi and Gethli can solve problems across two bodies while questioning the category observers want to assign them.

Why this matters: A human-style self-report may be the wrong instrument for a differently organized intelligence.

Non-interference

Can observation avoid changing its subject?

The survey team enters covertly to protect Landfall, yet its assumptions and later copies become part of the modeled world.

Why this matters: Ethical distance becomes impossible once observers are inside the system they judge.
