The opening
An aging crew meets an empire built during its peace
Thirty years of relative stability make retirement imaginable just as Laconia returns with technology designed to make resistance appear irrational.
Where the story begins
The Transport Union faces a power that rejects negotiation
The Rocinante crew has aged together while the gate colonies became societies of their own. Holden and Naomi prepare to pass command to Bobbie. Then Laconia sends the Gathering Storm through the gate and demonstrates weapons, armor, and control systems derived from protomolecule research.
Transport Union president Camina Drummer tries to protect the network without sacrificing the worlds it connects. Captain Santiago Singh arrives convinced that disciplined imperial rule can end humanity's destructive fragmentation. Medina Station becomes the test case for whether that promise can exist without surveillance, exemplary punishment, and occupation.
